Daily life in Kuwait after your hip or knee replacement
Prayer, sitting on the floor, the majlis, the car, the heat. The everyday things nobody puts in a hospital booklet — answered for your stage of recovery.
The advice on this page changes as you heal. Enter your surgery date on the home page and each section will show what applies to you today. If your surgeon has told you something different, follow your surgeon.
Prayer
You can pray from the first day after surgery. What changes is the position.
Hip replacement
Until your precaution end date (usually 6 weeks; your surgeon may extend this)Stand for the parts of the prayer you can do standing, including rukūʿ: bow from the hips only as far as keeps the operated hip above 90 degrees — a shallow bow, hands towards the knees, chest not dropping towards the thighs. For the rest of the prayer sit on a chair. No sujood: bending the hip that far puts the new joint at risk of dislocating while the tissues around it are still healing.
On the chair, sit tall with feet flat and knees no higher than your hips; for sujood, bow your head and shoulders forward a little, no more.
After your precaution end dateReturn to the floor gradually. Over two to three weeks, increase how far you bend a little each day: standing prayer with rukūʿ first, then sitting on a low stool for sujood, then kneeling with your hands on the floor, then full sujood. Stop at any position that causes sharp pain and stay there for a few more days.
Knee replacement
First 6 weeksStand for the parts you can do standing, including rukūʿ. For the rest of the prayer sit on a chair: the wound must be closed and dry before you kneel on it, and the knee will not bend far enough for sujood yet.
Sit with both feet on the floor and bow from the chair for sujood.
After 6 weeksYou can kneel and do sujood as your knee allows. Go as far as you comfortably can and no further; your range will increase week by week as you work through your bending exercises. Put a folded prayer mat or a small cushion under the knee at first. Use a chair on days the knee is swollen or sore.
Kneeling on a new knee is often the last thing to feel normal. For some people it stays uncomfortable for months, and a few never find it fully comfortable. That is not a sign anything is wrong.
Sitting on the floor and the majlis
Hip replacement
Until your precaution end dateNo floor sitting. Sitting on the floor bends the hip past 90 degrees and usually crosses the legs, which are the two movements you must avoid.
In a majlis or diwaniya, ask for a chair and sit near the entrance so you do not have to step over people. A raised chair with arms is best. Avoid low sofas and bean bags: if your knees are higher than your hips, the seat is too low.
After your precaution end dateStart with short periods on a firm cushion, legs out in front, and build up. Cross-legged sitting comes last. Get up every 20 to 30 minutes at first.
Knee replacement
First 3 weeksSit on a chair with your leg supported straight when resting. Floor sitting means bending the knee for a long time, which increases swelling and stiffness in the early weeks.
After 3 weeksYou may sit on the floor with the leg out straight in front of you. Sitting with the knee fully bent under you, or cross-legged, comes later as your range improves, and only for short periods. If the knee is swollen or stiff the next morning, you sat too long.
Sofas, beds and the toilet
- Sit on chairs with arms so you can push up with your hands. Add a firm cushion to raise a seat that is too low.
- Hip: use a raised toilet seat until your precaution end date. A frame or grab rail helps you sit and stand safely.
- Hip: sleep on your back with a pillow between your knees. Sleeping on your operated side is usually fine once the wound is comfortable; sleeping on the other side needs the pillow between the knees so the operated leg does not cross the midline.
- Knee: keep the knee straight when resting, never with a pillow under the knee. A pillow under the heel or the whole lower leg is fine.
- Squat toilets are not suitable for hip patients during the precaution period and are difficult for knees for several months. Use a Western toilet.
Getting into a car and driving
- Push the seat all the way back and recline it slightly before you get in. Sit down first, then swing both legs in together. Hip: keep the knees apart and do not twist.
- For long trips, stop every 45 to 60 minutes and walk for a few minutes. This lowers the risk of a blood clot.
- You may drive when you are off strong painkillers, can bend the knee or hip comfortably to work the pedals, and can brake hard without hesitating.
- Operated right leg: usually wait 6 weeks.
- Operated left leg with an automatic car: as soon as you are comfortable sitting in the driver's seat and off strong painkillers.
- Check with your surgeon before you drive again in either case.
Heat, walking and the outdoors
Walking is the most important exercise after either surgery, and in Kuwait most of the year the outdoors is not an option in the daytime.
- Walk indoors: around the house, in a mall, or in an air-conditioned corridor. Distance matters more than location.
- In summer, walk outside only before sunrise or after sunset. Heat increases swelling in the operated leg and dehydration increases the risk of a clot.
- Drink water steadily through the day. Painkillers and heat together can leave you very dehydrated without noticing.
- Sand, gravel and uneven paths are fall risks in the first three months. Stay on hard, flat ground.
- Wear closed shoes with a back. No slides or flip-flops until you walk without a limp.
Household help and family
- If you have help at home, let them do the lifting, carrying and cleaning for the first six weeks. Do your exercises yourself.
- Hip: someone else puts on your socks and shoes until your precaution end date, or use a long-handled shoehorn and sock aid.
- Stairs are fine once your physiotherapist has practised them with you. Going up: good leg first. Going down: operated leg first, with the rail.
This page gives general guidance for a routine primary hip or knee replacement. Your surgeon's and physiotherapist's instructions always come first.
